I usually catch 2 or 3 mistakes, coverage gaps on auto insurance policies I review. And I’ll tell you what the biggest one is right now.
SUM coverage or Supplemental Uninsured Motorist coverage is often written at the state minimum of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. Well this is not good because the “other driver” in an accident will also have at least this coverage so they cancel each other out.
SUM coverage is insurance for YOU and YOUR family on your own policy which you can collect from. Example – let’s say you had $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident. The other driver causes an accident with you and has the minimum limits. You can now collect $75,000 per person or $250,000 per accident on your own policy for underinsured limit the other driver had.
Go look at your policy and see if I am right or not. In our office, we match the SUM limit to what you liability limits are, which is protection for others against you. SUM is protection against others for you!
Some insurance companies (and their agents) don’t want to give you this coverage because then it is a claim against their policy. I would insist and demand you have this important protection for you and your family.
Don’t buy insurance because it is cheap, buy it to protect you & your family!
1. Drive Less for and get a discount
Some carriers will discount your premium with a low-mileage discount if you drive less than 7,500 miles per year. Also ask your agent if you can receive a commuter discount for using public transportation.
Bodily Injury Coverage covers the cost of injury or death that you are responsible for. This coverage does not include your car, you or other people on your policy.
