U.S. jobless rate hits 9.4 percent – Kansas City Business Journal:

The BLS said the unemployment rate continuedto rise, increasinh to 9.4 percent from 8.9 Steep job losses continued in manufacturing, while declines moderates in construction and several service-providing industries. The numbetr of unemployed persons increasedby 787,000, to 14.5 millioh in May. Since the start of the recessiojn inDecember 2007, the number of unemployedc people has risen by 7 and the unemployment rate has growh by 4.5 percentage points. Unemployment ratess rose in May for adultmen (9.8 adult women (7.5 percent), whites (8.6 and Hispanics (12.7 percent). The joblesss rates for teenagers (22.7 percent) and blacka (14.9 percent) were little changed over the month.
The unemploymeny rate for Asianswas 6.7 percent in May, not seasonallhy adjusted, up from 3.8 percent a year earlier. Amongh the unemployed, the number of job losersd and people who completed temporary jobs roseby 732,000 in May, to 9.5 This group has increased by 5.8 million since the start of the recession. The numbee of long-term unemployed – those jobless for 27 weeks or more increasedby 268,000 over the month, to 3.9 and has tripled since the star t of the recession. The May report said the jobles s ratefor management, business and financial operation hit 4.6 percent, up from 2.7 percent last and the rate for professional and relatecd occupations hit 4.2 percent, up from 2.
