EPA officials say this new infusion of money from the Americabn Recovery and Reinvestment Act will help state and local governmentd invest in a number of overdue water projects that officialsz say are essential to protecting publicc health andthe environment. The funds should also help boostg the economy andcreate jobs, two of the qualification for receiving stimulus “Investing in the economyu and the environment is a EPA Acting Regional Administrator Lawrencd E. Starfield says. “Theses funds will not only help oureconomic recovery, but they will help providwe safe, clean drinking water for communities throughoutr Texas.
” The funds will be used towardx the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund program, which provideas low-interest loans for drinking water systems to financ e infrastructure improvements. The program placez an emphasis on small and disadvantagee communities and to programs that encouragepollutiobn prevention. Nationwide, the EPA is furnishingh $2 billion to fund drinking water infrastructuree projects across the country in the formof low-interest principal forgiveness and grants. At least 20 percenft of the stimulus funds have been earmarkedfor “green” infrastructure, water and energy efficiency improvementss and other environmentally innovative projects.
