Purchasing Auto Insurance for a Used Car

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

With the current economic climate, many people looking to buy a car are thinking used.  It can help save on your monthly payments and the initial down payment.  Most people will extend their savings to their auto insurance by using the minimums for collision, comprehensive, bodily injury and property damage.  In this article we’ll explore how to be smart and save on your used car insurance.

Minimum coverage works best for people who don’t use their vehicle much or live in a city with low traffic volume.  Their logic is less people on the road, the less chance for an accident.  But think about what would happen in an accident.  High medical costs, repairing your vehicle, attorney fees all come along with not having the proper insurance.  If you own a used car, consider purchasing other benefits to protect yourself from being in an accident.  Think of the money your saving buying a used car and put it into proper and comfortable coverage on your auto insurance policy.

The value of the used car is another major concern.  If your car is worth over $2,000, it should be covered with a good range of benefits to prevent major expenses in the event of the unknown.  Talk with your health insurance agent and see how your health insurance coverages work in the event of an auto accident.  If you are properly covered, call your auto insurance agent immediately.  If your used car is valued under $2,000, make sure you have proper bodily injury and collision coverages to have protection against litigation.  Lawyers, hospitals, and law enforcement officials will stay strict if you’re involved in a major accident.  Stay protected with smart auto insurance.

Think about adjusting your comprehensive and collision coverage for your car insurance policy.  We advise increasing your collision deductible to reduce your premium, but make sure to keep your comprehensive deductible low to prevent major out-of-pocket expenses that are out of your control.  Above all else, talk with your auto insurance agent and tell them you wan to save money.  Explore options.  You’ll be surprised what they can dig up in order to save your business.
