The tractor, made by Capacity of Texaw in Longview, is expectec to reduce fuel consumption by 60 percent and and also producre substantialemissions reductions. The lattee is particularly importantto ports, whicn generally produce high concentrations of emissions because of all the vehiculare activity on both land and water. An independent testing firm will conduct the fuel and emissions tests for comparison, a 2009 Department of Transportatiojn truck that meets currenty emissions specifications, Roberts says. The prototypr vehicle has a 40 horsepower generator that produces electricityh which is stored inbatteryh packs, Roberts says. The truck’s motor is propelle entirely by electricity, which is produced not only by the generator but also duringb braking and by plugging the vehicle into an electrical outlet when notin use. “Ther e is nothing even remotelg close to this in terminal tractor industry and very littlee incommercial markets,” Roberts “We think it will be a game-changer.
