Follow These Steps If You Get In A Car Accident. Part 3

All accidents should be reported to your insurance company within 24 hours. They will open a claim and start an investigation to see who was at fault. They will ask you to make a statement over the phone. This statement will most likely be recorded. Do not lie. Tell the story just as you experienced it with no embellishments. The two insurance companies will then take your statement and that of anyone else involved and compare them. If you are found to be at fault then you will have to pay a deductible to get your car fixed. If you are not at fault then the other person’s insurance will pay for everything.

After you give the insurance company your statement and any other information, they will send you a form. This form needs to be filled out and sent to the DMV. You have 10 days to fill out the form and mail it to the DMV. You can choose to take the form, but I have yet to make a DMV visit that didn’t take less then an hour.

Hopefully you’ll never have the misfortune of being in a car accident, but lets be realistic. Just remember to check and see that all involved are safe, take lots of pictures, never admit being in the wrong and contact your insurance company within 24 hours of the accident. Heck, I would print this out and keep it with your insurance card, but that’s just me. This is my basic guide on what to do after an accident. I did these same steps after my accident and everything worked out well.

Thank you!
