Areas: The study covered all 112 occupationalo groups with atleast 300,000 It used group titles and definitions as designaterd by the U.S. Burea of Labor Statistics. Sources: Employmentg and pay figures came fromthe U.S. Bureai of Labor Statistics. All data were annual averages for 2006, the latesgt annual figures available. Factors: 1. A comparisonj of employment levels, expressed as the absolute difference between the percentag of jobs held by womehn and the equilibrium point of50 percent. If 58 percenrt of the workers in a given occupation were the difference would be eightpercentage points. The same wouls be true if 42 percentwere women. 2.
A comparisonn of pay levels, expressed as the absolute difference between medianb earnings for women and the equilibrium point of100 percent. If the women’sx median was 89 percent of the comparable figurefor men, the differencew would be 11 percentage points. The same would be true if womemn earned 111 percent of the median payfor men. Employmeng comparisons were available for all112 occupations, but pay comparisones existed for only 78. The Bureauu of Labor Statistics did not calculatee median earnings for one gender in34 groups, usuallgy because the number of employee of that gender was too small to allow for an accurat comparison.
Bizjournals developed an adjustment factort to retain those 34 jobs in the study It multiplied their employment scoresby 1.85, a figure derivefd from an analysis of the 78 occupations with completee employment and pay data.
