11 Tips For Saving on your Car Insurance Rates

1.  Drive less for and get a discount.

  • Some carriers will discount your premium with a low-mileage discount if you drive less than 7,500 miles per year.  Also ask your agent if you can receive a commuter discount for using public transportation.

2.  Adjust your deductible.

  • It’s possible to earn up to a 15% discount by increasing your car insurance deductible from $250 to $500.  Make sure this fits your level of comfort, as you will be out-of-pocket this amount in the event of a car accident.

3.  Know your credit score.

  • Car insurance companies consider your credit score a risk factor.  A bad score could increase your premium.  Make sure you pay your bills on time and keep up with your credit report.  For help or information on credit counseling, click here.

4.  Do not use your auto for business.

  • Some carriers will increase your auto insurance premium if you use your car for business use.  If you need to use your car for business purposes, make sure to notify your agent so you are properly covered.

5.   Location, location, location…

  • The more people and traffic problems in a specific area, the more risk for accident.  Urban areas are generally considered higher risk than, say, rural areas, and auto insurance costs are greater.  If moving is a possibility, talk with your car insurance agent about auto insurance rates in specific areas.

6.  Be a safe driver!

  • Sometimes the best offense is a good defense.  You can potentially lower your monthly premium if you have had no accidents or traffic tickets within a three year period.  Depending on your state, a single ticket may increase your car insurance rates nearly 10%.

7.  Think before you buy a new car

  • Specific cars are rated on a certain risk scale for auto insurance companies.  Sports cars and some luxury vehicles are in this category because of their risk to theft and vandalism.

8.  Park in your garage!

  • Autos that stay in garages during the day and night are less likely to be the victim of theft or vandalism or accident.  Ask your agent about a reduction in premium if you store your car in a garage.

9.  Install a car alarm and additional safety features

  • Car alarms and tracking systems are becoming less expensive.  If you’re buying a new car, check the additional costs of safety features against the cost of your auto insurance.  Also check for reductions in your premium for safety features such as anti-lock brakes and multiple airbags.

10.  Multi-policy discounts

  • Auto insurance carriers often offer discounts for people who have other policies within their company.  This goes the same for multiple vehicles.  Check with your auto insurance agent and see what you can save.

11.  Shop car insurance rates

  • At Insurance Align, we advise checking your car insurance rates with other carriers at least 30 days before your auto insurance policy is set to renew.  And the good news is, you can do it all right here!
